Sonoma Valley

Historic towns, vineyard landscapes and an easygoing sophistication at the heart of Wine Country.

Stretching from the City of Sonoma north through Glen Ellen and Kenwood, Sonoma Valley offers an unusually varied collection of places to live. Within a relatively compact area, buyers can choose from historic in-town homes, gated communities, hillside retreats, vineyard estates and private country compounds.

The valley is defined by the Mayacamas to the east and Sonoma Mountain to the west, creating a landscape of vineyards, oak-covered hills and changing microclimates. That geography also creates meaningful differences in sun, views, access, fire exposure and property character from one location to another.

For many residents, the appeal is the balance: acclaimed food and wine, a strong sense of community, beautiful outdoor spaces and convenient access to San Francisco and the broader Bay Area.

Landmarks & Points of Interest

Stretching between the town of Sonoma and Santa Rosa, Sonoma Valley — known as the Valley of the Moon — is the historic heart of California wine country. Flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west, its moderate climate is ideal for a diverse range of grapes, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sonoma Valley AVA

One of California's most storied wine regions, the AVA is home to hundreds of wineries strung along Highway 12 between the Sonoma Mountains and the Mayacamas Range. The area offers everything from intimate tasting rooms to grand estate wineries, many known for bold reds and Rhône varietals.

Glen Ellen

A rustic village of natural beauty nestled between Sonoma Mountain and the Mayacamas, surrounded by picturesque woodlands, hillsides, and celebrated wineries. Author Jack London once lived just outside town, and the area retains an unhurried, storybook charm.

Kenwood

A compact highway hamlet with estate wineries nearby and quick access to Sugarloaf Ridge trails. Kenwood Vineyards, built on the site of the 1906 Pagani Brothers Winery, helped establish the valley as a world-class wine region.

Jack London State Historic Park

Named for the author, the park houses many of his belongings and haunts, including the ruins of Wolf House — built in 1911 and destroyed by fire two years later. Explore the House of Happy Walls museum, London's cottage, and miles of hiking and horseback trails across his former Beauty Ranch.

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Northeast of Kenwood, this park delivers multi-mile trails, redwood pockets, and Bald Mountain viewpoints, plus an observatory, seasonal programs, and camping for stargazing and sunrise hikes.
